FMA appoints its first chief economist

The Financial Markets Authority has appointed an economist and behavioural science expert within the financial services industry to the new role of chief economist.

Wednesday, January 18th 2023, 2:04PM

Stuart Johnson joins the FMA from London where he has headed behavioural economics, conduct risk and customer experience, at major international banking and insurance firms since 2015. He has an MSc from London School of Economics.

He will start at the FMA in February leading a team of economists, research specialists, data analysts and consumer insight experts on the FMA’s strategy to become more research-driven, and data and intelligence-led.

FMA chief executive Samantha Barrass says Johnson’s behavioural insights and analytical mindset will help the FMA focus its regulatory lens on the right priorities and outcomes. “This will make a significant difference to the way we best target our resources towards our goal, to ensure the finance sector is working well for all New Zealanders.
